A Little About a Lot of Things

I’m here, but it’s been way too long since I felt like posting.  It’s a combination of reasons, let me give the condensed version:

When we got back from Massachusetts, I knew my father was not well.  He had been battling cancer and doing treatments that made him quite ill.  I planned to go to Alabama to visit when G left to go back north.  My brother went to see Dad over Thanksgiving and said he was doing pretty well, was able to eat and was up and about somewhat.   That there was no need to dash right out there.  So it was decided I’d go the following weekend and stay a few days.  The day before I was to leave, I got a call saying to get there ASAP, that he wasn’t doing well at all and may not make it through the night.  So I rented a car (remember I hadn’t driven my truck in months and I wasn’t sure of it) and left with my Google map in hand.  I hadn’t even gotten out of town when I got a call saying he had passed.  I turned around and went to be with my brother.

After that, I was just kinda out of it.  I loved my dad, he was an amazing man.  But we weren’t really close, like “called just to say hi” kind of close.  I hadn’t seen him in a couple of years at this point.  So there is a lot of guilt to deal with.  I wanted to write about him and every time I started, I would just cry.  So I didn’t.  And here we are, seven months later, and I still can’t write about him and his impact on my life.  Maybe soon…I want to share what a good man he was, the things he taught me, the way he had of making everything okay, even when you never thought it would be again.

I started working from home in January, taking customer service calls for a major tax software company, then after tax season, a major home improvement store.  It’s a 15 step commute, I love it!  Right now I am between clients, but will be selecting another to train for soon.

Sewing has consisted of a little here and there, it’s hard to sew when you’re on the phone hours at a time.  I did make a couple of quilts, pretty happy about them.  When I get pics, I’ll put them up so you can see.  I’m working slowly on another that I’m quite pleased with.  I’ve let my Etsy and Artfire stores go, but am slowly retaking pictures of items to restock.  In the meantime, I’ve relisted some stuff and actually added a couple of new things.

G came back from Massachusetts in early March and is now working down south, but comes home every weekend, so it’s not too bad.  We get a lot of riding in on the weekends, but it’s so hot, we wait til later in the day of we can’t get out early.  The American Legion Riders Poker Run on May 8th was great, it was for The Wounded Warrior Project and we donated $19,000 to the Project.  We’ve done a couple of other rides for local folks who fell on hard times and attended a benefit last weekend.  It’s great to see how the biker community comes together to help when needs arise.

I’m gonna try to post more regularly, and am still working on the post about my dad.  It’s good to know that some of you still drop by every now and then, hopefully there will be new stuff to see very soon!

that I have a blog!  It’s been a crazy couple of weeks and now I am in south Florida with G.  Everyone do a dance for sunny skies and no more rain-I need some wind in my face!  It’s been way too long since I’ve been on a good ride and we have plans to ride up to Jupiter and Hobe Sound this weekend.  So please, join our friend Robin in doing a sun dance for us since I have to go home on Monday!

On another note, I have sold a bunch of hats!  My friend Carlos runs a tire shop and had one on at work one day.  A customer came in and commented that his welders would love them.  So Carlos called me and I brought a few up and the guy bought all ten.  Then ordered a dozen more for the rest of his men.  So that’s what I’ve been doing-making more hats.  Didn’t have time to take pics, but they were all really neat.

I promise to post next week when I get back, I made Robin a backpack that I need to show you.  It’s way too cute!  Since she’s going through a really hard time right now, it made her smile, and of course, that makes me smile!

Today is my brother Mike’s birthday.  So “Happy birthday Mikey!  How does it feel to be old?”   My birthday was Sunday, I’m a little less than a year younger than him.  We’ve long since given up the presents thing, but at least I could wish him a great day in front of the whole cyber world, right?  This is one of my favorite pictures of Mike-he was home from boot camp-he’s 21 here.

Of course, he’ll probably kill me if he sees it!  He retired a couple of years ago.

G was home for the weekend and we had a good time.  We took the Sporty out for a while, it felt so small after being on the Springer for the last year!  But we had fun and the weather was great.  A ride on a smaller bike is better than no ride at all!

I’ve been making more and more hats.  It seems like everyone who sees them wants one.  I even had a welder bring me his favorite hat and ask to make more like it for him since he couldn’t remember where he got it.  I did, but it sure took a lot longer to make than the other ones.  My friend Ro offered to set up a table at the Bike Show and sell them for me (I’ll be cooking).  It’s two weeks away, so I think I’m gonna make some hats and doo rags up and see what happens.  Not like the space will cost anything and with 400 plus bikers around, I’m bound to sell at least a few!  (Don’t mind the vines crawling up my neighbors garage, first pic is one side, then the reverse side of the same hats.)

Yesterday I got tired of sewing hats, so I made myself a purse.  And yes, I did take pictures of it-take a look

The pattern is from Machen Machen-a blog about making and doing.  It’s the second one completed, the first I forgot to take pics of and was a gift.  I fell in love with the fabric, it’s a home dec weight called Skullduggery by Alexander Henry.  If you look close, you can see that the white pocket on the front is placed so that the design continues, just inverted colors.  I wish I could say I planned it that way, but I really didn’t.  I knew I needed an outside pocket and just picked up a scrap of fabric.  Well, lo and behold, it was just like the center motif on the front.  So I measured, cut and lined it and sewed it in place, using a lot of pins to keep in in place.

I couldn’t find a button that looked right with the print, and didn’t have any solid black ones, so I tied the handles together at the top.  I think I like it better that way, longer straps are better for me cos I like to just toss my purse over my shoulder and go.  I also added a zipper pocket inside.  It’s a really easy and fairly quick purse and I’m really happy with the way it turned out.  I’ve got a good bit of fabric left over, so I’m working on a wallet to go with it.

Okay, so now I can quit feeling guilty about not posting anything new for over a week-you’re all caught up now!  I’ve got a few other things in the works, but I gotta some work done!

Happy birthday, big brother-I love you.
